In the book the things they carried what sense does jimmy love martha?

Jimmy Cross is Jesus Christ and he loves Martha (Mary) in the normal ways that boys love girls--that's why he has to give her up and burn her stuff--so that he can take on the burden (carry the cross) for his men. (On the other hand loving in that way, is perhaps too much for anyone--even JC.)
